Linda M. Crate – love your children

love your children

i used to write poems
to the father i never met,
used to wish to meet him on
stars shooting through the skies;
but he never showed his
i was told he was a monster,
but in my mind he was simply
an angel whose wings were torn
from his body in the jealous
maw of those who sought to shoot
him down;
but i have had dreams where
he is the hero,
others where he was the monster
that killed me and others where
i was the one that had to kill the monster
he was to free myself from the stain
of his blood in my veins;
and i don’t know how to tell you this
but even with a loving mother
i still noticed he was never there—
so love your children if you have
them because it’s not their fault they exist.
